The Vagina Monologues

Robert and I went to see “The Vagina Monologues” at the Firehouse Theater last night. It was a good show, very funny but also kinda sad. If you’ve never seen it, it talks about being a woman in an abusive relationships, rants about going to the gynecologist, and tampons. If you want your guy to know a little bit more about what women face, or if you want a girls’ night out, this is a show worth seeing. I spoke with Paul Allen and big changes are coming to the Firehouse. If you want to see the show, it runs again next Friday and Saturday at 8:15 p.m. The Firehouse Theater is at 1245 E. State Street. OMG, I hope Robert was amply "rewarded" for having to endure that experience.

I like your quote: "If you want your guy to know a little bit more about what women face . . ." Believe me, we guys all know -- you women never stop talking about it.

I think I read last week that you are going to be doing some video stuff. I'm looking forward to it.

Actually, Robert WANTED to see it, and was concerned because some of the more controversial parts were being left out. Turns out, it's hard to find a production of VM that is true to the actual written play--it's common to leave that stuff out, and living here in ConservoLand, God forbid we offend anyone. We both liked the play, and Robert especially liked the low-cut top I wore for the occasion.

The video stuff may be a while. We still need to get actors together, and I plan to post flyers and spread the word on my blog, Facebook and wherever else I can. Robert has some scripts written, so we've got material, we just need the bodies. I may also come up with some stuff of my own, just for the hell of it. Believe me, people will be notified when we get it up on the web!!!

Some Thoughts on American Dirt, Cultural Identity, Cultural Appropriation and other Assorted Nonsense in My Life

I guess there's a book out called American Dirt which is getting criticized because it was written by a white woman about a Mexican woman fleeing Mexico because she's getting chased by someone involved in drugs or something. I haven't read the book; I'm just going on what I've seen online so far. Apparently, Sandra Cisneros endorsed the book, which really pissed off Alisa Valdes Rodriguez. Read the brilliant blog post, “Auntie Sandra's Cabin: Why No One Should be Surprised Sandra Cisneros Endorsed American Dirt .” It's a fascinating read, and parts of it made me think, “right on.” It's also sort of summed up why the so-called “voices of their people” quasi-academics/writers have never really appealed to me. I can't identify with them. I grew up in the Midwest the daughter of a government worker and a restaurant employee.
